Riding in Belgium

There’s a reason Belgium is considered a mecca for cycling. From the windy flat lands to the historic town squares, Belgium offers a mystical feeling when riding here. You can feel the country’s history and culture of cycling. Being here motivated me to not only be the best cyclist I can be but also the best person. The dedication and sacrifice of the Belgian riders are stories of inspiration and of hard work.

While it’s not somewhere you’d come for climbing with Belgium being pretty pan flat, if you’re near the coast there’s no need for climbs because it’s super windy! Riding down twisty, narrow farm roads with no traffic was one of my most epic experiences on a bike. The best part of riding in Belgium for me, though? Flying through small towns with rough cobbles before exiting the other end onto a more private, just-for-me roads.

On and off the bike, we had the opportunity to see some of Belgium’s most historic landmarks and cities. Our favorite was the breathtaking Bruges, about 15 miles from where we were staying. After visiting once, we went back a second time just to take it all in: the medieval buildings, sky-high Belfry, horse-drawn carriages parading the cobbled streets, chocolate shops down every street and hot-pressed waffles. And topped off with delicious cappuccinos at any of the restaurants in the main square!

With it’s history, the architecture, the waffles and cappuccinos, and the ability to easily ride into France or the Netherlands, I left Belgium knowing it would wanting to come back for more.

If you’ve been to Belgium, what’s been your favorite part? If not, where’s your favorite place to travel to and ride?
